Eid of American Muslims
Amran Farah
Eid is really the Met Gala for American Muslims. Eid, meaning festival or holiday in Arabic, refers to the special religious holiday celebrated by Muslims around the world. The are two Eid festivals in Islam: Eid al-Fitr (after the holy month of Ramadan) and Eid al-Adha (after the holy pilgrimage). And while prayer, remembrance, and community are the hallmarks of Eid, the fashion is also very important. Growing up my mother would buy each of us a new outfit, down to our socks and underwear. It was almost blasphemous in my household to wear something old to Eid prayer. As I’ve gotten older, this has meant making sure I ordered a special abaya for Eid prayer every year, and an outfit for the family breakfast after—because I need an outfit change! So when you see a lot of Muslim families at the mall the day before Eid, please give them grace because dressing for the Met isn’t easy.
