A Festivus for the Rest of Us
A Festivus for the Rest of Us
“Combining cultural favorites for a new family tradition.”

My husband and I, prior to becoming parents, never celebrated the holidays. However, when our kids were born, we felt it a little sad to raise them without some of the joy and festivity we all experience over the holidays. So, both of us being big fans of A Christmas Story which we watched almost *religiously* every year and Seinfeld, which we also watched while having dinner at the table most evenings, we had an epiphany for our own family, traditional holiday celebration. We began celebrating Festivus. We struggled to find a suitable pole, which is what’s required per the tenets of Festivus, so instead, we got a replica Leg Lamp – the “Fragilee Major Award” made famous in A Christmas Story. We forewent the “Feats of Strength” but did permit some “airing of grievances” to be spilled. In lieu of the Feats, we did encourage expressions of Gratitude. The only other “rule” was the day was not set, and it had to snow on the day of celebration—usually when both of us parents had some time off from work. Dinner also had to be a Chinese Food feast … sometimes purchased and other times home prepared. Our kids, who are now too “old” for our “silliness” have some very fun and unique memories of our Festivus celebrations.
