Summer or Winter Brandy Slush

Gina Tonn

Brandy slush has been a summer staple in my family for as long as I can remember.  My grandma reliably pulled from the freezer one batch made with brandy in a plastic ice cream pail and one batch made without brandy in a Cool-Whip container for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, even a casual summer weekend. The first year I celebrated the winter holidays with my in-laws, I discovered they were also a brandy slush family – but it wasn’t limited to only warm weather. This recipe, pictured below from the family cookbook my grandma compiled in Microsoft Word – along with THE ice cream scoop referenced in the recipe – reminds me of family and celebrating time together all year round.

Ingredients

  • 7 c water
  • 2 c sugar
  • 12 oz. frozen orange juice
  • 12 oz. frozen lemonade
  • 2 c cooled green tea
  • 2 c brandy
  • Lemon-lime soda, for serving

Directions

  1. Boil sugar and water until sugar dissolves.
  2. Cool, then add the remaining ingredients except the soda. Mix all in an ice cream pail.
  3. Freeze.
  4. To serve: Use 2 heaping scoops of slush in each glass. Fill with lemon-lime soda and ice cubes.
